Fresh flowers are one of life's simplest pleasures — but they can wilt faster than expected if not cared for properly. Here's how to keep your blooms looking their best for longer.
1. Cut Stems at an Angle
Always cut stems at a 45-degree angle before placing them in water. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase, which would block water uptake.
2. Use Lukewarm Water
Most flowers prefer lukewarm water over cold. Fill your vase about 2/3 full and change the water every two days to prevent bacterial growth.
3. Remove Below-Water Foliage
Any leaves submerged in water will rot quickly and contaminate the entire arrangement. Strip all foliage below the waterline before arranging.
4. Keep Away from Fruit
Ripening fruits emit ethylene gas, which accelerates flower ageing. Keep your arrangements away from fruit bowls, especially apples and bananas.
5. The Right Spot Matters
Avoid direct sunlight, heating vents, and drafts. A cool room away from direct heat will extend bloom life dramatically.
6. The Penny Trick
Dropping a copper penny into your vase water is said to act as a mild antibacterial agent — though changing the water regularly remains more effective.
